Chapter Five

1 Thessalonians 5:1-28; KJB

1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. Listen to this chapter
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 * Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of (k) salvation. ( 1 )
9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain (a) salvation ( 2 ) by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (hsld5)
22 * (M_81) Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your (1) whole spirit and soul and body ( 3 ) be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

whole spirit and soul and body

Man a trinity. That the human soul and spirit are not identical is proved by the facts that they are divisible. Hebrews 4:12 and that soul and spirit are sharply distinguished in the burial and resurrection of the body. It is sown a natural body (soma psuchikon= "soul- body"), it is raised a spiritual body (soma pneumatikon). 1 Corinthians 15:44. To assert, therefore, that there is no difference between soul and spirit is to assert that there is no difference between the mortal body and the resurrection body. In Scripture use, the distinction between spirit and soul may be traced. Briefly, that distinction is that the spirit is that part of man which "knows" 1 Corinthians 2:11 his mind; the soul is the seat of the affections, desires, and so of the emotions, and of the active will, the self. "My soul is exceeding sorrowful" Matthew 26:38 see also ; Matthew 11:29; John 12:27. The word transliterated "soul" in the O.T. (nephesh) is the exact equivalent of the N.T. word for soul ( (Greek - eupsucheo [ eu)yuxeÑ·] ), and the use of "soul" in the O).T. is identical with the use of that word in the N.T. (see, e.g.) ; Deuteronomy 6:5; 14:26; 1 Samuel 18:1; 20:4,17; Job 7:11,15; 14:22; Psalms 42:6; 84:2. The N.T. word for spirit (pneuma) like the O.T. (ruach), is trans. "air", "breath", "wind," but predominantly "spirit," whether of God (e.g.) ; Genesis 1:2; Matthew 3:16 or of man ; Genesis 41:8; 1 Corinthians 5:5. Because man is "spirit" he is capable of God-consciousness, and of communication with God ; Job 32:8; Psalms 18:28; Proverbs 20:27 because he is "soul" he has self- consciousness ; Psalms 13:2; 42:5,6,11 because he is "body" he has, through his senses, world consciousness.

1270_1; 1 Thessalonians 5:23, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved

    Man a trinity.

      That the human soul and spirit are not identical is proved by the facts that they are divisible (Hebrews 4:12), and that soul and spirit are sharply distinguished in the burial and resurrection of the body. It is sown a natural body (soma psuchikon = "soul-body"), it is raised a spiritual body (soma pneumatikon), 1 Corinthians 15:44. To assert, therefore, that there is no difference between the mortal body and the resurrection body.

      In Scripture use, the distinction between the mortal body and may be traced.

    Briefly, that distinction is that the spirit is that part of man which "knows" (1 Corinthians 2:11), his mind; the soul is the seat of the affections, desires, and so of the emotions, and of the active will , the self. "My soul is exceeding sorrowful" (Matthew 26:38; see also Matthew 11:29; and John 12:27). The word translated "soul" in the Old Testament ( nephesh ) is the exact equivalent of the New Testament word for soul (Greek: psuche ), and the use of "soul" in the Old Testament is identical with the use of that word in the New Testament (see, e.g., Deuteronomy 6:5; 14:26; 1 Samuel 18:1; 20:4, 17; Job 7:11, 15; 14:22; Psalm 42:6; 84:2). The New Testament word for spirit ( pnweuma ), like the Old Testament ruach, is translated "air," "breath," "wind," but predominantly "spirit," whether of God (e.g., Genesis 1:2; Matthew 3:16) or of man (Genesis 41:8; 1 Corinthians 5:5).

5_3; Zechariah 12:6f, shall be inhabited agan in her own place
Ref. 1 Thessalonians 5:23, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body
    Genesis 1:26, Let us make man in our image

    Man.

      Gen. 1:26, 27, gives the general. Gen. 2:7, 21-23, the particular, account of the creation of man. The revealed facts are:

        (1) Man was created, not evolved. This is

          (a) expressly declared, and the declaration is confirmed by Christ (Matthew 19:4; Mark 10:6);

          (b) "an enormous gulf, a divergence practically infinite" (Huxley) between the lowest man and the highest beast, confirms it;

          (c) the highest beast has no trace of God-consciousness—the religious nature;

          (d) science and discovery have done nothing to bridge that "gulf."

        (2) That man was made in the "image and likeness" of God. This "image" is found chiefly in man's tri-unity, and in his moral nature. Man is "spirit and soul and body" (1 Thes. 5:23). "Spirit" is that part of man which "knows" (1 Cor. 2:11), and which allies him to the spiritual creation and gives him God-consciousness. "Soul" in itself implies self-conscious life, as distinguished from plants, which have unconscious life. In that sense animals also have "soul" (Gen. 1:24). But the "soul" of man has a vaster content than "soul" as applied to beast life. It is the seat of his emotions, desires, affections (Psa. 42:1-6).

        The "heart" is, in Scripture usage, nearly synonymous with "soul." Because the natural man is, characteristically, the soulual or psychical man, "soul" is often used as synonymous with the individual, e. g. Gen. 12:5. The body, separable from spirit and soul, and susceptible to death, is nevertheless an integral part of man, as the resurrection shows (John 5:28, 29; 1 Corinthians 15:47-50; Revelation 20:11-13). It is the seat of the senses (the means by which the spirit and soul have world-consciousness) and of the fallen Adamic nature (Romans 7:23, 24).

M_81; 1 Thessalonians 5:22, Abstain from every form of evil

    Avoid ALL Evil

      I would now like to point you to some of the principles I learned from my study. I am not going to be dogmatic about my interpretation of the related verses. If you are born again, the Holy Spirit is your teacher and I am confident that sooner or later you will be led to the same general conclusions. And like the apostle Paul, I too will not force anyone to follow men's rules. But I have no qualms at all about trying to persuade you of the best way to handle a dispute over music styles.

    Avoid any preference or style that can be associated with evil

      Many Christians today would rather not discuss 1 Thessalonians 5:22 because its application would require them to give up some of their cherished worldly practices. But its benefits are there for all to see. Paul addresses not just the acts of evil themselves but also the very form of evil. The Greek word translated as 'form' also carries the idea of a view, an appearance, a fashion, or a shape. The Bible calls for abstinence. That means we should avoid it, or restrain ourselves from indulging in it.

      In 1 Peter 2:11, the apostle Peter warns us to avoid fleshly lusts, desires that are forbidden to us, that come out of our sinful nature. I believe our desires to have Contemporary Christian Music styles in the church come directly from this sinful nature. Peter adds another sobering reason for abstinence: these desires war against our souls. Carnal, fleshly desires literally conduct a military campaign against the right principles and moral precepts of God. This is not a physical war; this is spiritual warfare.

      Not only are we to avoid evil and fleshly lusts (and even the appearance of such), we should not even have a hint of immorality among us. Ephesians 5:3 states: 'But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints.' The New International Version renders this verse: 'But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.'

      Jesus took this whole idea further when he said, 'But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart' (Matthew 5:28). By this statement, he equated the evil and lust we contemplate in our unseen thought life with the evil and lust that can be seen by everyone. Therefore, not only must we avoid evil and lust themselves, and avoid any hint or the appearances of them, we must also avoid those things that would encourage us to even consider any such sin in our minds.

      Let us apply this to the practice of using Contemporary Christian Music in worship services. When we bring rock music styles into the church, we violate this principle of abstinence from the appearance of evil. We are guilty of:

      • Embracing a form (or a carrier) of evil, because Contemporary Christian Music imitates the same worldly music and performance styles that are used alongside all kinds of immorality.

      • Indulging our fleshly lusts and polluting our thought life.

      • Committing treason against the Lord by aiding and abetting the enemy in the war against God's principles and precepts.

      Application

        We should avoid all music styles that could be associated in any way with today's evil and immorality. We should not use them in church or in our private lives.
