The Millennium

Revelation 20:1-10

A. SATAN BOUND IN THE ABYSS, VERSES 1-3

An angel binds Satan a thousand years, and shuts him up in the bottomless pit, verses 1-3.
 â€¢ OU Top â € ¢ AC  SRB
 JFB
 OU Index

    1. The "Thousand Years", occurring six times in verses Revelation 20:2-7, is the only actual Biblical mention of the Millennium. The Lord's Second Coming is said to be mentioned over three hundred times in the New Testament; but the Millennium only here, in this most mysterious part of this most mysterious book in the Bible.

    2. To live in the blessed hope and continual Expectation of the Lord's Coming is one thing: to have a theory about the Millennium is quite another. Some think the Millennium will be an Age of Blessedness in this present world; others, that it will be one of the Ages of Eternity after the flesh and blood order of existence has passed. And some talk as if they knew all about it.

B. THE FIRST-RISEN SAINTS REIGN WITH CHRIST, VERSES 4-6

They who were beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, who have part in the first resurrection, and shall reign with Christ a thousand years, verses 4-6

    1. Satan's expulsion from heaven, chapter 12, was connected with the Birth and Ascension of Christ, Revelation 12:5. Here, Satan's binding is connected with the Second Advent of Christ.

    2. Some think the two passages refer to the same event. But there Satan made trouble for the earth, Revelation 12:12. Here he is kept from making trouble, Revelation 20:3.

    3. The "Bottomless Pit", Revelation 20:3, Satan's domain, presided over by Satan himself, or one of his archangels, Revelation 9:11, now becomes his prison.

Revelation 20:4-6

C. A THOUSAND YEARS VERSE 6

    1. They who were beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, who have part in the first resurrection, and shall reign with Christ a thousand years, verses 4-6

    2. It will last 1000 years. By some, this is thought to be a literal 1000 years, foreshadowed as a Sabbath Rest after 6000 years of man's history. By others, To mean an indefinitely long time, as, in God's chronology, "One day is with the Lord as a 1000 years, and a 1000 years as one day", 2 Peter 3:8.

    3. "The First Resurrection", Revelation 20:5. A Second resurrection is not mentioned. But the expression, "The rest of the dead lived not till the 1000 years should be finished", seems to imply that there will be Two resurrections, one before, and one after, the Millennium.

    4. New Testament teaching generally links together the Lord's Coming, the Resurrection, and Judgment Day, all in one perspective: as, when looking at distant mountain peaks, nearly in line, one behind the other, they seem to be close together, when, in reality, they may be separated by immense distances.

    4. However, Jesus, in using the phrase, "The resurrection of the just", Luke 1-4:14, may have intended it as a hint that the resurrection of all would not take place at the same time.

    5. Paul, speaking of the resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15:23, says, "Each in its own order: Christ the first-fruits; then they that are Christ's at His Coming; then comes the end"; as if the end might- be some time after the resurrection of His people, as theirs will have been sometime after His.

Revelation 20:7-10

D. SATAN LOOSED, VERSE 7-9

When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, shall go forth and deceive the nations, and shall gather Gog and Magog from the four corners of the earth, verses 7, 8.

    1. Babylon, the Beast, and the False Prophet, the agencies through which he had done his deadly work, having been destroyed, chapters 17, 18, 19, Satan's own time has at last come.

    2. He makes a furious but brief and futile effort to regain his hold on the earth.

E. GOG AND MAGOG, VERSE 8

 â€¢ OU Top â € ¢ AC  SRB
 JFB  OU Index

    1. "Magog", Revelation 20:8, is the general name of the northern nations of Japeth's posterity, Genesis 10:2. "Gog", Revelation 20:8, is their prince, Ezekiel 38:2. Probably used here as general names for the wicked of all nations from the "four corners of the earth", in one last attack on the saints of God.

    2. We wonder how Satan could muster such a vast following, when he had been bound for a 1000 years. It has been suggested that, being the time of the general resurrection, the vast multitudes of vile and wicked men and women, of ail centuries and ail nations, who would be coming to life, would furnish Satan a fertile field for his work.

    3. The "Lake of Fire and Brimstone", Revelation 20:10, 15, is the final destination of Satan, the Beast, the False Prophet, and the Wicked.

    4. If the "Beast" and "False Prophet" were Institutions, rather than Persons, they were, to say the least, created and managed by Persons, of whose spirit they were expressions.

H. AND IS FINALLY CONSIGNED TO THE LAKE OF FIRE, VERSE 10

The great white throne, and the dead, small and great, standing before God, and all judged according to their works, verses 11, 12.

    1. If being cast into the fire meant annihilation for the Institutions.

    2. Even so, the Persons lived on and on in torment, "day and night forever", Revelation 20:10, a strong expression, meaning absolute endlessness.

Revelation 20:11-15

    1. Babylon, Boast, False Prophet. Satan, and evil influences, now being out of the way, the time has at last come for the assignment of each and every Human Individual to his Final Habitation.

    2. The "Flight of the earth" from the presence of Him who "sat upon the Great White Throne", Revelation 20:11, may be by Fire, 2 Peter 3:10-12.

I. THE GENERAL RESURRECTION, VERSE 12

The sea, death, and hades, give up their dead, and are destroyed; and all not found in the book of life are cast into the lake of fire, verses 13-15.

    1. Those who had already been judged as worthy of the First Resurrection wilt here have their Judgment confirmed in the presence of the assembled universe.

    2. The Judgment will be complete. Every person from every age and nation will be there. Every deed and motive will have been recorded. It will bo the "Day when God shall Judge the Secrets of men", spoken of by Paul in Romans 2:16.

    3. There wilt be only two classes: the Saved and the Lost. The "Books" will have the records of men's lives. The "Book of Life" wilt have the roll of the Saved. There are many of such mixed character that we would not know where to place them. But God knows.

    4. The "Second Death", Revelation 20:14, is the final doom, at the end, as distinguished from physical death which is the lot of all humanity. It is here called the "Lake of Fire".

J. AND LAST JUDGMENT, VERSES 11-15

    1. Jesus talked about it in the Gospels: the place where the "Fire is not quenched"; "Eternal Fire prepared for the Devil and his angels". Literal Fire? Who knows? It may be more painful to the soul than literal fire is to the body.

    2. Even Death Itself was cast into the Lake of Fire, Revelation 20:14. For those outside the "Lake", Death, the night-mare of earthly existence, will Never Again rear its hideous head, Revelation 21:4.
