    Chapter Four
    Matthew 4:1-11

    1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit ~ (g) into the wilderness to be tempted ~ (h) of the devil ~ (i).
    2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
    3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. (4)
    4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth (4) of God ~ (l).
    5 Then the (3) devil taketh him up into the holy city ~ (1) , and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
    6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: (4) for it is (5) (6) written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
    7 (4) Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
    8 Again, the devil (M_54) taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of (5) the world,*2 and the glory of them;
    9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, (4) if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
    10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is (4) written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
    11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

    Matthew 4:12-17

    12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
    13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
    14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
    15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
    16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
    17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

    Matthew 4:18-20

    18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren*, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
    19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
    20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

        • The Call of James and John,
          sons of Zebedee
    Matthew 4:21-25

    21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James* the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
    22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
    23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
    24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
    25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

    Notes for This Chapter of Matthew

    Holy Spirit

    word = Inspiration

    Jehovah, see Deut. 8:3

    Verse 1 note: Temptation.

    Also, "tempted"; Cf. "temptation"

    Lit. Satan, Gr. diabolos, accuser: See Mat. 4:1, 5, 8, 10, 11; Mat. 12:26; (Cf. Gen 3:1; Rev 20:10)]

    *In the New Testament one Greekword, hagios, in its various forms is rndered, "holy," "holiness," "sanctify," "sanctified," "sanctification." Like the Hebrew godesh, itsignifies "set apart for God." The important references follow Matthew 4:5, i.e., Sanctify, holy (things) (M.T.). Matt. 7:6; Matt. 4:5; Rev. 22:11.)

    *2 The Greek word Kosmos means "order," "arrangement," and so, with the Greeks, "beauty"; for order and arrangement in the sense of system are at the bottom of the Greek conception of Beauty.

                When used in the New Testament of humanity, the "world" of men, it is organized humanity–humanity in families, tribes, nations–which is meant. The word for chaotic, unorganized humanity–the mere mass of men– is thalassa, the "sea" of men (e.g., Rev. 13:1). For "world" (kosmos) in the bad ethical sense, see John 7:7, and references, [kosmos is indicative of the world-system. John 8:23, Rev. 13:8].

    See NOTE *1.

    Sanctify, holy (things) (N.T.) Matt 7:6; Mat. 4:5; Rev. 22:11]

    The twisting of the meaning of God's Word illustrated in verses 7 and in other temptations shown here is a major reason I stick to the ONLY "Authorized Bible," the King James Bible!

    Jehovah. Deut. 6:13; 10:20

    NOTE: Angels

    Christ (First Advent. Matt. 12:18-21; Gen. 3:15; Acts 1:9

    Repentance

    Kingdom: New Testament

    *NOTE-18: Peter and John at this time were already disciples (John 1:35-42). This is a call to service.

    *James" Two persons are called by this name in the N.T.:

  • (1) James the son of Zebedee, an apostle (Matt. 10:2), and the brother of the Apostle John, apart from whom he is never mentioned, and with whom, together with Peter, he was admitted to the especial intimacy of our Lord (Matt. 17:1; Mark. 5:37; Mark 9:2; Mark 14:33). He was martyred by Herod (Acts 12:2).
  • (2) A son of Alpheeus (or Cleopas) and of Mary the sister of Mary the Mother of Jesus (see Matt. 1:16, [Note why the changed expression here is important. It is no longer, "who begat," but, "Mary, of whom was born Jesus." Jesus was not "begotten" of natural generation.]), and brother of Joses (Mark. 15:40).

    He was, therefore, a cousin of the Lord Jesus. He is called James "the less" (Mark 15:40; lit. little, i.e. of shorter stature than James the son of Zebedee). He was an apostle (Matt. 10:3). It has been conjectured that "Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus" (Matt. 10:3) was identical with the Judas of Luke. 6:16, who is there called "of [i.e. 'son' or 'brother' as it has been variously translated] James." A Juda is mentioned with a James and Joses and Simon in Mark. 6:3 as "brother" of our Lord (see Matt. 13:55 [Son of Alphaeus, Matt. 4:21] ).

    The Gospels mention no other James who could be called the brother of the Lord Jesus, but James the less was certainly the son of Alphaeus and Mary the sister of our Lord's mother. The conclusion seems, therefore, most probable that Matt. 10:3; Matt. 13:55; Mark. 3:18; Mark 6:3; Luke. 6:15; Acts 1:13; 12:17; 15:13; 21:18; Gal. 1:19; 2:9, 12; and James. 1:1 refer to James the less, son of Alphaeus and Mary, and cousin, or, according to Jewish usage, "brother" of the Lord Jesus. He was the author of the Epistle of James.
