    Chapter Seven
    Matthew 7:1-6

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. (M_19)
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

    Matthew 7:7-11

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

    Matthew 7:12

12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (10wft)

    Matthew 7:13-14

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (23C) * (jmb5)

    Matthew 7:15-20

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (fhs2)
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (fhs2)
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. (jmb5)

21 (M_41) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 (14K) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (fhs4)
23 (jmb7) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (jmb6)

    Matthew 7:24-29

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: * (jmb9)
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: * (jmb6)
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (jmb6)
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Notes for This Chapter of Matthew

  • v.1, d - In the sense of condemnation. Return>

    M_19; Matthew 7:1, Judge not

      Judgement Of Others

If you are involved in the contemporary Praise and Worship movement within your church, I do not condemn you! I am very sensitive to Jesus' command in Matthew 7:1-5 and Luke 6:42 that we should not judge! He went on to say that we must first remove the beam from our own eye, and only then will we see clearly! I have tried to remove the telephone poles from my own eyes before I presumed to call anyone else to account. -

Although I will share freely my convictions and advice, nothing said in this book should be construed as being a rule by which I expect other Christians to live. Making new rules would be tantamount to legalism, and I (following the example of the apostle Paul) have no desire to weigh anyone down with regulations that 'indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self- imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh' (Colossians 2:23).

This is a family fight, a disagreement between brothers and sisters in Christ, whom I care enough about to warn against any involvement in such an unproductive and divisive movement. I want to challenge Contemporaries to consider their role in Contemporary Christian Music Praise and Worship and show them a better way. I would ask, there- fore, that this testimony is given a fair and complete reading before any judgement is made.

      Acceptance Doctrine

      • 'Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord", shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. This is the truth.

      • 'God accepts you where you are, no matter what.' This is the big lie.

I contend that the wholesale embracing of Contemporary Christian Music by many churches is a direct consequence of our failure to confront and refute 'acceptance' teaching. Perhaps we wanted to avoid any hint of being labeled as 'legalists'. We have traded biblical discernment for tolerance of all forms of worldliness, so why should it come as any surprise that 'anything goes' with music in church? Contemporary Christian Music's use in worship has been firmly established through the 'mother' lie of acceptance doctrine and further justified by several 'baby' lies and half-truths, which shall be discussed at another reference.

This false teaching has opened the doors of our churches to the spirits of immorality, divisiveness and deception.

In this new Church of Acceptance, showing tolerance for worldly affections and behaviors is far more important than exercising biblical discernment. A person is simply not allowed to question another's personal preference, and if he does, then he must produce a specific Bible verse to back it up. (But as we will discover throughout this book, the Contemporary often does not hold himself to that same biblical standard to defend his own arguments.) In this thoroughly biased atmosphere, it is easy to see why a Traditional is afraid to speak out about music styles. It is also apparent why Contemporary Christian Music styles have been accepted so easily by so many with no discernment about the negative effects.

  • v.6, h - Sanctify, holy (things) New Testament, Mat. 23:17, 19; Mat. 4:5; Rev 22:11 Return>

*Luke 11:1-3 "teach us to pray . . ." This is the central New Testament passage on prayer.

In the srmon on the Mount Christ had announced the new basis of prayer, viz.: relationship (Matthew 6:9; Matthew 6:28-32). The believer is a child of God through the new birth (John 3:3, NOTE).

The clear revelation of this fact at once establishes the reasonableness of prayer; a reasonableness against which the argument from the apparent uniformity of natural law shatters itself.

God is more than a Creator, bringing a universe into being, and establishing laws for it; more than a decree-maker determining future events by an eternal fiat.

Above all this is the divine family for whom the universe with its laws exists (Col. 1:16-20; Heb. 1:2, 10, 11; Romans 8:17): "When we pray, say Our Father."

What God has always done in the material universe concerns the reverent investigator of that universe.

What He may do in His own family concerns Him, and them, and is matter for divine promise and revelation. Science, which deals only with natural phenomena, cannot intrude there (1 Cor. 2:9).

Editor's Note: With great embarrassment I have, after all these years, taken the time to investigate the word meanings or "eternal" and "everlasting." The translations are correct in the usage of the word "eternal." It was this writer's prior belief that the word "everlasting" better described the infinite meaning put forth by the Greek translations from the earliest manuscripts. So, with my head bowed in great humility I accept the word "eternal." ~ b craig

The King, having in Chapters 5-7 declared the principles of the kingdom, makes proof, in Chapters 8 and 9, of His power to banish from the earth the consequences of sin, and to control the elements of nature.
