The
Robert Blair Craig
and Glenda Ann ‘Carraway’
Family
These photos range from the time I first met Glenda up and through the time when we moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana.
I’ll begin with photos of the new Ford bought from McGill Motors, Indiana, PA. It was a 1956 Custom Line T-Bird. It was a bright green in color. I had rather well put the 1948 Chivy of dad’s out of commission and when I came home from Boot Camp (Navy) he needed a car to take him back and forth from work in Indiana and I talked them into letting me make the payments on the Ford – they use it – and when I got out of the Navy I would then have a car of my own. Somehow that part got lost and there was some confusion over it all in 1959.
Glenda and I married on October 17, 1959 – 3
months before I got out of the service. I looked
everywhere for work around Portsmouth and
Norfolk Va and after a time, when a Fuller Brush
Sales route was the best I could find, we packed up
and moved to PA. I found work at the Indiana
Canada Dry soft drink plant driving a delivery route.
It was a struggle and after the guarantee pay was
over and I went on full commission it was a wash.
Dad finally got me on with Pyrofax Gas as a
delivery truck driver and after a year of that we
decided to go to Fort Wayne, Indiana with Uncle
Ward and look for work there. I went to work at
Wayne Pharmaceutical Supply as a pricing clerk. It
was unsatisfying in any way – work conditions and
pay. Some-way, some-how, I was convinced I could
do better.
These photos are a mixture of these memorable days.
