PHOENIX, ARIZONA 1950 & 1965.

Phoenix Arizona has been one place where I have visited and lived that intrigues me -- even until today. If I had to make a choice between 2 or 3 states besides Virginia, I suppose it would be Arizona. My mother took my brotehr, Kenny, and myself and we visited Phoenix & Uncle John and Aunt Hannah (HOLMES) Learn in 1950. We were able to see much of the tourist places of interest then. I attended school while in the US Navy at Imperial Beach, California, and on my weekends in 1957 I would hitch hike across the mountains to go to visit in Phoenix, AR.

Later, discharged from the Navy, Glenda and I married, had 2 boys, work was hard to find in PA, and we moved to Leadville, Colorado, in search of a good job. Times were rough and we didn't have much, but we had each other. I had a family to look after. In 1965, I left a job in Indiana, PA, and went to work at the Climax Mining Company for $15.95 an hour. Working in Indiana I took home $56.00 a week. Things started going really well, however, Roger took sick after a time and we were forced to rush him to a lower climate. Phoenix was the only place near that we had anyone that would provide us a place to live until we got settled. When we arrived in Phoenix and got him to a hospital he was running a tempiture of 104 degrees. They bathed him in ice to bring it down. So, we visited Uncle John Learn in 1950, again I visited them in 1957 and then our family visited him in 1967. Aunt Hannah had passed away before then and he offered us room and we lived there for about two weeks. I soon found work and we were able to move to our own apartment.

Work again was the problem. Leaving the good pay in Colorado and going to work in Phoenix for minimum wage didn't allow much for anything. I had to work a full time job at Ladds as a delivery and applinace service man and we managed about 20 appartment units for our appartment to live in. Finally Glenda and myself got weary with the 24/7 work of managing those low rent appartments. We were homesick! So we packed up what little we had to return to "who-knew-what."
The photographs again are of poor quality. They were taken using an 8mm movie camera. However, even as our memories fade, we often have them sparked alive by a small trigger. In this case it is these photos. They won't mean much to anyone else but us. But to us they mean ever so much.
