Cecil V Cherry Memories First Grade In the first grade, I sat beside Betty Ann. Every time Betty Ann got back a paper, shehad made an "A". I didn't understand how she did it and I couldnt. Our reading groups were named Blue birds.Red birds. Yellow birds, and Buzzards. I think I belonged to the Buzzard reading group. My favorite activity was recess. I remember chasing Patsy. Second Grade Every spring , we presented a skit for our parents. Betty Ann and I were always partners. We the tallest in our room. John D. taught me how to fight in the second grade, and I never forgot. Third Grade Mrs. Hill bent back my fingers and threatened to spank them. I spent the rest of the year trying to get on her good side. During recess and after school, everyone played marbles. Shooting marbles and drop boxes were the main ways to lose your marbles. I kept everyone supplied with marbles. In the spring . we were to perform a skit dressed as raindrops. Everyone's hat looked like a raindrop but mine. It looked like a dunce hat. Fourth Grade Mrs. Baker, our teacher in the fourth grade, was young and pretty. During the fourth grade, we began to notice the girls. However, Hugh started in the third grade. Recess became rougher and rougher. We played keep away with a football. I never played in a football game as rough. Riding the bus was worth your life. everyone had an older brother or sister to protect them. I carried hats and apples on bus, needless to say, they never reached school. I got Trigger that year. Fifth Grade Fifth grade was a very exciting time. Vada sat in front of me . She drew a picture of a girl on the back of my tablet. After recess, I remembered Mrs. McKeel reading NANCY DREW mystery stories. I also remember getting thirsty after recess and telling Mrs. McKeel I had a headache . She allowed me to go get water to take the asprin. A very sad time was when John D's mother died. Trigger became a big part of my life. Sixth Grade During the sixth grade, there were phyiscal and emotional changes in my body. I began a growth spurt which lasted until the tenth grade. I was six feet six inches tall. Purberty presented maturity problems which I'm not sure are over. Mrs. McDowell was tall and well endowed. During the Halloween Carnival, Hugh and I let the air from her tires. My parents and I moved to Greenville because my mother had complications with her pregnancy. I lived in Greenville for three years before moving back to Washington in the ninth grade.
