During these periods, I lived in the local libraries, so I made friends with the librarians. I wanted to know EVERYTHING. Not virtually everything, but really everything. Seeing my ravenous interest in Math and Physics and History and Philosophy and Science Fiction, they all eventually convinced me that I should quit beating around the bush and get into college, something I was convinced was only for rich people, not me. But they won the argument. In 1961, after saving up $500 and taking the SAT, I left New Bern and headed off to Raleigh via Carolina Trailways, where I quickly found a job on campus, and later at Walker Martin GE Distributor, as TV Repairman. There were trying times, but I didn't starve to death, and I quickly found that everybody in the freshman student population at NC State University was a nobody. There, you lived or died by what you could do, and it made no difference if your father was a King, a Janitor or a Farmer. If you could do the work, you stayed. If you failed to do the work. you were out. Those were your priviliges! Meritocracy lives!! And to hell with your townie arrogance and your smooth connections!! I loved education all over again. I won't bore you with Calculus. Modern Physics, Thermodynamics, Semiconductor Physics etc etc, but it was an "intellectual feast" (with apologies to Judge Bork), a 6-year long high. I continued to work, and received BS in Electrical Engineering in 1966, and Masters in EE in 1968. Career stuff: worked 9 years for Philco-Sylvania in TV Engineering, 25 years for GE in Communications Engineering, attending the GE Management School at Crotonville, NY. In 1990, the GE Communications business was merged with Ericsson, and I continued with the merged business until retirement in 2000. At retirement I was Chief Technology Officer in the Wireless Internet Business Unit. Married in 1972 to a girl I met at my brother's wedding to her sister. She was Maid of Honor and I was definitely the Best Man. Happily married still, have 3 wonderful children, shown below. Had 2 beagles, sequentially: Captain Barkley and Maggie. Love them all. Traveled to Brazil, Argentina, England, Scotland, France, Germany. Italy, Morocco, Greece. Chech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland. Canada, Mexico, Japan, Singapore. Indonesia, Korea and New Jersey. Came away from all of the above with some ideas about values and ways to live.
