Nick Rawls Old Ford School Class of 1948 - 1949 School Memories • My first girl friend Patsy Adkins and locating money to buy her popsicles. • Big Swamp neighbor classmates Hugh Willard and Linda Chesson. • School bus trips when Hugh's brothers and older buddies encouraged Hugh and Nickie to fight all the way to and from school. Older sister Valerie telling mother that Nickie has been fighting on the school bus. • Betty Ann Wynn, first grade, was taller than I was and she had tears for having to be in school. I only had tears when I left my mother. • Jane Carraway telling Ms Kopp that I had been throwing paper at Hugh and both us, along with other classmates, receiving hand spanking with ruler. • Hugh Willard having a marble drop box and I never won at playing marbles or Hugh's drop box. • Playing Red Rover Red Rover and not letting the girls run through the line. • Hugh Willard winning the award for reading the most books in Ms Baker's class. HE READ MORE BOOKS THAN THE GIRLS (I only read fifty books). • Billy Matkins opening doors and helping me when I broke bone in one arm and cracked bone in second arm. • I won the Halloween Carnival Best Costume Contest with my damaged arms. • Reggie Stalls pitching to Hugh Willard and he could not throw a softball that Hugh would swing at. Both teams would spend the total recess period waiting for Hugh to get the correct ball to swing at. • Bobby Jackson and Thomas Warren singing "Home On the Range". • Cecil Cherry's height two years after he moved to Greenville. We met at a Boy Scott camporee. • Linda Chesson, Linda Leggett and Nickie Rawls: the church singing trio. • Joe Hodges and Nickie Rawls visiting and playing together Sunday afternoons. • Playing Pony League Baseball on the Old Ford School baseball field. • Umpiring County League Baseball games on the baseball field behind Jane Carraway father's store. • Assisting janitor, Mr. Perry, installing the school intercom system. I pull the wires under the building from the central office to the classrooms.
