After High School Events During the summer after high school graduation I primed tobacco and in August 1960 I volunteered to be drafted in the US Army. My cousin J T Walker was drafted to serve in the Army and we left Washington on the same bus. After being inducted into the Army I left JT in Raleigh and was given a train ride to Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. I was stationed at Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in Georgia, Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Polk in Louisiana and in Augsburg and Kitzeng Germany. It was a sad day when the ship passed the Statue of Liberty on the way to Germany. I was stationed in Germany during the Berlin Crisis. I was discharged from the Army August, 1962, with the rank of Sergeant (same as Elvis Presley's rank in two years). I returned to Washington and worked as a saw filer for Butch Ferguson at Mason Lumber Company.
In 1963,1 worked for the US Geodetic Survey in Brunswick, GA; Sanford, NC; Grand Isle, Monroe and Cameron, LA and Lake City FL. I worked on the oil well platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1964, Washington High School classmate Steve Bowen and I shared an apartment in Winston-Salem. Steve was a driver license examiner with the Highway Patrol and I was assistant manager of a finance company. In late 1964,1 was hired by the NC Geodetic Survey and I relocated to Raleigh NC and shared apartments with Big Swamp Old Ford classmate and NC State Student Hugh Willard. I traveled and worked from Maneto and Newport River to Asheville and surrounding mountains. I surveyed in Washington and Texas Gulf at Aurora. I also worked at this job during the summers while I attended college. In 1966, after rooming with college student Hugh I decided to attend college. I returned to Washington to take the SAT with Washington High Senior Sister Dottie Rawls. I was accepted and attended Louisburg College for three semesters and transferred to and graduated from NC State with BS Engineering Operations degree.
In 1971 my first job with college degree was Carrier Air Conditioning Company, Industrial Commercial Equipment Division, Charlotte, NC. I traveled NC and SC selling maintenance contracts and overseeing repair and maintenance on Carrier equipment.
I also married a Winston-Salem girl and she attended and graduated from University ofNC, Charlotte with Elementary Education Degree. In 1976 I was hired by Texas gulf, Aurora and was the Milling Department Maintenance Engineer over the phosphate ore processing plants. My wife Ann taught at Belhaven Elementary School.
