Under the pressure of time, we elected to capture his life story information via an interview. Your editor prays forgiveness for errors of omission or commission, due to inexperience, bias and incompetence (a vile combination, most 2003 reporters only suffer from two of these literary maladies.)] Memories of Old Ford years: Getting a spanking from "Frog" Gaskill, due to some forgotten, but common misbehavior. Sneaking out under the water tower with John D to smoke cigarettes.

The traveling "Shows", which cost a dime (real money in 1949), consisting of wild west lariat and cowboy demonstrations, and lasso-ing some of the boy students. Also had Yo-Yo shows and Musicals. Really good stuff then. for poor little country kids. "Miss Belle" calling the kids who were waiting for the bus home. to hand out "leftover" apples, popsicles. oranges and bananas. Everybody loved "Miss Belle". Miss Baker, the most beautiful woman on earth, often found coins in her purse to pay the way for poorer children to see the shows, and other events. John D was the "King of the Drop-Boxes" and always went home with a box full of marbles. I never could shoot marbles worth a darn! Riding and pushing the merry-go-round. One day in vigorous play, John & fell off and got a gash in forehead. My Uncle is step-father of Mary Alma. Life History Left OFS in 4th grade, moved to New Bern when father left share-cropping and took job at Dr. Pepper Plant there. His Mother was in ill health. Attended New Bern central school in 5th grade. Father was disabled while Dal was in 6th grade. Big for his age, Dal, the oldest, dropped out of school in 6th to care for mother and earn living for family. Worked for Blade Tree Experts in New Bern for $.75 per hour, kept family together. Married at 18, found job at New Bern Shipyard in yard maintenance. At 20, began apprenticeship in welding at Shipyard. Developed professional skills, and stayed in welding for 30 year career, working after Shipyard at Texas Gulf and other construction businesses in region. Disabled in 1992 by diabetes and heart attack.
