Still today, over fifty-one years
had many outstanding experiences
as I've gone hunting. I could relate to
you many memories, but I'd rather tell
you how I first learned about hunting
from my father. The lessons contained
skillful tactics that allowed the enjoying
of God's wonderful creation while pro-
viding meat for the family. Two things
were always stressed as my teacher
showed me how to enjoy what he
called "heavenly hunting."
that hunting was not primarily
for sport but for food. (Proverbs 12:27)
I was never to kill any animal that I
would not eat. The second principle
was that I must always conduct myself
in a way that would insure the safety of
all in the hunting party and the protection
of the landowner's property.
placed a high value on human life and
the care of all of His creation. My first
lesson about God's love and mercy was
also learned on a hunting trip many
years ago.
father, an avid hunter of small game,
had invited my uncle and two of his
friends to go rabbit hunting. I was only
seven years old at the time, but I had
been allowed on a few occasions to
accompany my father on hunting trips.
I had begged permission to go on this
cold morning, but my Father refused at
first because, as he said it, "There are
strangers with loaded guns going
along." Finally, after some persistent
pleading, my father agreed to let me go,
but he warned me that, for safety's
sake, I would have to stay close to him.
the trip seemed short as we drove to a
nearby farm. The special place chosen
was at the edge of an open field that
was surrounded by large wooded tracts
of hardwood trees. This field, now
green with the signs of winter oats, had
one distinctive hedgerow that ran
through the center. That overgrown
strip was full of blackberry briars,
honey suckle vines, and sagebrush.
Hopefully, today, it would be full of fat
rabbits, too, I thought.
quickly disappeared in the briars and
cover as they began hunting feverishly
for the scent of the game. It was very
cold, and my Daddy said, "Any rabbit
hiding in there will be 'sitting tight'
today." I knew that he meant a rabbit
wouldn't want to get out of its warm,
cozy bed to run around in the woods on
this cold day.
across the bottom. It was "Tilly," my
Daddy's best jump dog. She had mstled
a bunny from its hiding place, and the
chase was on. Soon, all four dogs were
hot on the trail of that cottontail rabbit.
had told me and from previous rabbit
chases that I had experienced, that the
pressure of the hounds would cause the
rabbit to run hard and fast and try some
tricks, too. It's common for a rabbit to
dart in and out of the cover and occa-
sionally to even backtrack to make the
dogs lose the trail. If the dogs persist,
sooner or later the bunny will make a
circle and come back very close to
where he has left his bed.
for Cottontail Chowder or Rabbit Stew,
the hunters would now position them-
selves along the field's edge and wait.
Guns could now be loaded, and hope-
fully, very soon there would be some
meat provided for our tables. Daddy
and I took a place on the field's edge, at
the top of a slight ridge, which over-
looked the entire area. Some fifty yards
below us, one of Uncle Bill's friends
was standing watch also. I had my
favorite "stick gun," and I would "play
like" if the rabbit came out near my
location. I was ready!
suddenly appeared right down the field
from us and headed straight for me. I
carefully raised my "gun" and took aim
at that bunny. But at the same time, the
other hunter, my uncle's friend, took
aim, also. He sighted his big, long,
twelve-gauge shotgun on that running
rabbit as it came up the ridge. Quickly,
my Daddy, seeing what a young boy
couldn't, threw himself around me and
swept me into his arms. Before I could
ask what he was doing, the shotgun
fired, and I knew!
hunter ready to shoot in my direction,
had put himself between the danger and
me. He had protected me from the harm
of those #6 shotgun pellets that my
Daddy took into his coat, pants, and
legs that day. He had stepped in, and in
his love, extended mercy to save me.
That story always reminds me
of how God, my heavenly Father, pro-
tected me in His great mercy. He
allowed me to be spared from the
penalty of sin that I should have suf-
fered until the grace of His Son, Jesus
Christ, could save me as I placed my
faith in Him. (Ephesians 2:4-10)
after that cold January day in 1952,
every time I take a hunting trip, I
remember that experience. I don't get
to hunt very much anymore, but when I
do, it is always a joy for me! I've
learned that God and hunting go together.

that is!

The unformatted article above,
"Hunting In Pennsylvania" is a
reminder to us that the day,
"Thanksgiving," is a day that
has been changed in meaning in
most every respect. The day is
just around the cornier when
Thanksgiving will be renamed to
some other "Inclusive" meaning
far removed from what it was
originally intended to represent.
As it now stands it is not politically
correct. For certain God will be eliminated
from it completely. Halloween will more and
more take it's place and likely overcome
Thanksgiving completely. Down the street
there is a home that is covered with lighted
decorations – In celebration of Halloween.
What a scary thought. Celebrate demons,
goblins, witches and ghost. Kick God out
of Thanksgiving and create a neutered day
of celebration of secularism. After all,
we will see nothing but Christmas Sales and
hear nothing but Santa Clause music from
Thanksgiving to Christmas. Why not call
Thanksgiving day, "Secularism Day?"
And, by the way, you (?) Christians that agree
with removing God from the Pledge of
Allegiance are making yourselves party
to taking God out of Christmas. Some muse
that taking God off of our coins and bills
will be next. Possibly, however, it won't
stop there. Satan will not be satisfied
until God has disappeared from every nick
and corner of Earth. And you middle of the
road, so called Liberal Christians are
part of the act. The curtain one day will
drop and you will find that you will be far
outside the theater of God's will. Jesus
said, "Go into all the world and preach
(broadcast) His world." Atheists, deists and
‘so-called-Christians' with the communism
bent to destroy America – guess what! You
are going to loose! You will be left out as
one of those "that call themselves by My
name but deny the power thereof" and I
don't even want to think about where you
will end up. In other words, you are in
for a bad time.
If you have Christ in you heart and life, Have
a thankful Thanksgiving.
