My Tribute to Johnny Cash ~~ from ChristiansUnite.com I was just 10 years old. It was 1964. One day, my father brought home a record album that I have cherished ever since. It was called, Hymns by Johnny Cash. Still yet a struggling pop, country, hillbilly, Gospel singer, Johnny had a few hits by then, but of course I knew nothing about that. I was just captivated by his songs, his raspy and earthy voice, and the beautiful words he sang. Filled with so much emotion, every verse seemed to be straight from his heart. Over the years, I think I collected every album he produced. From the sweet Gospel tunes, to the melodious love songs, to the deeper and darker sounds of Folsom Prison Blues, and the downright nasty, Deliah's Gone. They seemed to emerge from him as the darkness of us all tends to come forth from time to time. Never was Mr. Cash ashamed to tell the world through his music, or through interviews given by him, that he had a deep belief in God, and he was never ashamed to say that Jesus Christ was his Savior. Though he will always be remembered as one of the greatest Americans, in my mind he will be remembered as a great man who was a humble man, a man's man, never proud, he always remembered his roots, and though he probably influenced every genre of music more than anyone else, he was humble to the end, and may he be an example to us all. Postscript: Even Mr. Cash's death was a testimony. Monday September 15th, I'm watching Larry King live. Franklin Graham, among others, are the guests, remembering Johnny Cash. Mr. Graham gave the gospel message no less than five times, in five minutes, going out over the airwaves to millions of listeners. Praise God.
